Looking for a Subaru Baja near me. Always kinda wanted a turbo one as a project car that I could also use for yard work and throwing my mountain bike in the bed. Only non-broken one near me is a non-turbo ‘05 with 130k asking $15,000. I was expecting more like $6000 for something like this. I know they are rare and being the only one around I don’t blame the dealer for asking high... but are they this expensive everywhere now?

From what I’ve seen that’s about right.

I don't get it. These things are a neat footnote in automotive history, but 15K seems crackpipe to me.

1. CP. 2. they are artificially high because of how few are out there.
That being said, if the Subie was that enticing, I would say get the wagon and a roof rack. You can store your gear in the back without taking seats from any riding buddies.
I regularly bring 3 friends and 4 bikes to events and trailheads in my Pontiac Vibe thanks to the roof rack and hitch rack. I could do more bikes, but I am out of (comfortable) seating at that point.

Meanwhile I new England where these were more popular:

I think I need to get a hitch and a hitch rack. I have a roof rack bike carrier for my Outback and I never use it. The Baja is more enticing for the prospect of the turbo/manual combo and not being a WRX. But for that price I’d rather hunt for a turbo/MT Legacy/Outback of the same era.

Makes sense. Oddly most Subarus are cheaper here because they aren’t as popular, but get rare enough and the trend reverses I guess.

Ouch. Well I guess I may have to give up on this and maybe go for cheap beater pickup + old WRX.

One is for around town or when I’m in a hurry, or when I’m moving more than 2 bikes a considerable distance. The other is for longer highway trips involving 2 bikes or less (1 1/4" hitch means 2 bikes max on the back). I can do the mountain bikes in both as well, but for whatever reason I don’t have pictures of my woodland creatures on my car.
Just don’t be this guy:
The best part to the Thule hitch rack i have is how well it scales down when needed:

What brand is the hitch mount? Has it held up well? I see now that it is a Thule one. Looks nice I’ll have to look into it. Sorry I either didn’t scroll far enough or there was an edit.
I think my biggest problem with the roof rack is that my bikes and my car are in the garage, but the car+bike won’t clear the door. So I have to pull out of the garage first, then move the bike out and the driveway is on a hill. It’s enough of a pain that if I’m solo I just take the wheels off and stuff it in the trunk. Yes I’m lazy. I think I got spoiled when I had my S10 and could just throw the bike over the side into the bed on a whim and head to the trails.

It’s a Thule Doubletrack 990XT (newer model here: Thule Doubletrack 2 , better model with tilt-away feature Thule T2 ). I’ve had it since August 2009, never had an issue. It needs some grease after riding on my car essentially all of last year, but it’s in great shape. You get what you pay for. My key for this one was it could do any of my bikes without taking off wheels, or having to tie anything up to keep from spinning. Even my roof racks hold the frame, so the wheels stay on. A big plus was how well it folds up behind my little car.
I don’t have a garage, so that was never a concern for me, haha.
I think unless I get a tandem (I won’t) I have no need for a pickup with the hitch rack.

I honestly expected these to be more expensive.
